The Tour

Take a guided tour of Welbeck Abbey and explore this hidden gem.

Nestled in the rolling Nottinghamshire countryside, this country house remains a private family home. As such, we have limited numbers of tours available throughout the year.

Book a tour to see six grand State Rooms that date back to the 18th century, where the family have entertained high profile guests - from royalty to powerful politicians. Each room is decorated with some of the finest objects and artworks from The Portland Collection.

During your visit, you will also discover some of the earliest rooms at Welbeck Abbey, which date back to the 17th century.

The tour ends with the greatest Arts and Crafts decorative ensemble in any aristocratic house in Britain - seen in a private Chapel, library and long curved corridor.

As with all of our events, we will make sure that your visit to the Welbeck Abbey State Rooms is as safe as possible. The small group numbers and the large rooms in the house will allow for social distancing and we will follow all government guidance regarding a covid-safe environment.  Further information confirming arrangements and safety measures will be sent to you nearer the time, depending on changing guidance and best practice.

Focus Tours

Our tour guides offer a wealth of expert knowledge.

Choose a Focus Tour with Laura Sherburn, Callie Greaves or Hannah Marples to enjoy additional information on their specialist subjects.

In addition to the main tour information, our guides will share their specialist knowledge as well as allowing some viewing time to enjoy the room and ask questions.

Laura Sherburn will lead focus tours on Welbeck’s owner William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle (1593 – 1676), known as ‘the Loyal Duke’. In addition to the main tour information, she will delve deeper into the Duke’s life as a key supporter of King Charles I in the English Civil Wars and as an archetypal Cavalier.

Callie Greaves is a contemporary fine artist and her focus tours will tell the history of Welbeck through portraiture. Book this focus tour to discover the stories of some of the fascinating figures whose portraits decorate the walls of this stately home.

Hannah Marples is a historic costumer, who you might have spotted on the BBC’s ‘A Stitch in Time’. She will unpick the stories behind the clothing seen in the artworks at Welbeck Abbey.

The women of Welbeck tour will give greater focus to the female characters in Welbeck’s history – from Margaret Lucas (1623–1673), who was the first female published sci-fi writer, to Margaret, Duchess of Portland (1715 –1785), who developed the largest natural history collection in the country, and to Winifred, Duchess of Portland (1863 – 1954), who was the first president of the RSPB and set up an auxiliary Red Cross hospital at Welbeck during World War One.

Focus Tours take place every Tuesday morning at 10am.
